INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Thomas E. Wheeler II was sworn in as interim U.S. attorney for the Indianapolis-based Southern District of Indiana court this week, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.
Wheeler’s appointment by Attorney General Pam Bondi began Monday, a news release from the Department of Justice said.
President Donald Trump nominated Wheeler for the role on June 30, congressional records show.
The news release from the Department of Justice said Wheeler brings extensive legal experience to the role, having served as acting general counsel for the U.S. Department of Education and previously as acting assistant attorney general for civil rights.
Wheeler practiced law for 36 years at Indianapolis-based law firms including Bose McKinney & Evans and Frost Brown Todd.
Wheeler has previously been a senior adviser to the White House Federal Commission on School Safety, and senior counsel to the U.S. secretary of education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Department of Justice release said Wheeler played a key role in the creation of Indiana’s voter ID law, which was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Wheeler’s term will last four years, congressional records show.
Wheeler replaces Zachary A. Myers, who served from November 2021 through January this year. He’s joined an Indianapolis law firm, McCarter & English, a news release from the firm said.
Trump also on June 30 nominated Adam Mildred, a longtime deputy prosecutor from Allen County, as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Indiana court.
