Indiana bakery recalls white bread loaves with hazelnuts

WASHINGTON (WISH) — Evansville-based Hartford Bakery has issued a voluntary recall of its Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf due to undeclared hazelnuts, posing a risk to those with nut allergies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a news release issued Wednesday as part of an alert issued last week.

The recall affects six lots of the product distributed in Indiana and several other states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, and Mississippi. The bread was sold at Kroger, Walmart and other major retailers.

The recall was initiated after Hartford Bakery discovered that approximately 883 loaves of bread from six production lots contained visible hazelnuts. The packaging error involved a change from a hazelnut-containing bread to the implicated white bread product. The recalled products are marked with specific lot codes and have a net weight of 12 ounces. They feature an expiration date of July 13, 2025, on the packaging.

While the packaging states “May Contain Tree Nuts,” it does not explicitly mention hazelnuts, leading to the recall.

Hartford Bakery has received consumer complaints from people who noticed the nuts before consuming the product. No major injuries have been reported, but one customer experienced digestive discomfort after consuming the bread.

Consumers who purchased the recalled bread were asked to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Hartford Bakery at 812-425-4642 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. CT weekdays, except for holidays.
