At least 6 dead in 7 shooting since Friday
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Seven people are dead across six different shooting scenes, in another deadly weekend for Indianapolis.
The city is seeing more violence this summer, and it comes after a renewed focus on violence involving young people following the Fourth of July weekend mass shooting downtown.
The latest fatal shooting happened just before 7 a.m. Sunday on the near east side. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says a man and woman were found shot inside a shed. The man, 44-year-old Simeon Jones, later died. At last word, the woman is in critical condition.
Also this weekend, police say 12-year-old Israel Offett and 24-year-old Wayland Coe were killed in a northwest side parking lot. IMPD says that shooting happened early Saturday morning on 38th street near Georgetown Road.
On Friday, 16-year-old Rodney Ward Jr. died after a shooting at a gas station on the far east side. Police say the shooting was reported at a BP station near 30th street and Mitthoefer.
Police say 2-year-old Harmony Anderson died in what they’re calling an accidental shooting Friday afternoon on Ralston Avenue in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. IMPD says several guns were seized from that home. It’s still unclear if charges will be filed in that case.
So far, no word on suspects or arrests in these cases. Police are urging anyone with information about these shootings to come forward.
