INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Amid Sunday service, the roar of protestors and worshippers at the Sure Foundation Baptist Church summoned police to moderate the crowd outside of the church.
News 8 previously reported that Sure Foundation Baptist Church made inflammatory comments calling for LGBTQ+ people to be put to death or to commit suicide.
Sunday morning shortly after 10:30 a.m., protestors gathered outside the church in response to their message. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the church, at Lafayette Road and West 30th Street, to monitor the situation.
Charlize Jamieson, a transgender woman who went to Sure Foundation Baptist Church to attend service, says she was rebuffed at the door and directed away by the church’s officials. Jamieson spoke to News 8, saying she was not there for the protests, but “would have joined (the protests)” should she be turned away from worship.
Sure Foundation Baptist Church’s Facebook page says the sermon today is called, “Love Thy Neighbor.” Evangelist Justin Zhong preached — with slurs at times — about advocating for the death penalty for LGBTQ+ people and adulterers.
This is a developing story.
