Monroe County probationary deputy arrested for beating infant child

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — A probationary deputy at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was arrested for beating his infant child, leading to serious injuries.

May 19, Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital alerted police that they were treating an infant that was beaten. They say that the child had “multiple injuries at various stages of healing,” the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a press release.

The child’s father is Noel Hernandez Jr., a probationary deputy still training at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. He was hired March 31.

Indiana State Police began an independent investigation and Sheriff Marté suspended Hernandez for the investigation.

An arrest warrant for Hernandez was issued for neglect of a dependent resulting in catastrophic injury and aggravated battery that resulted in serious injury to someone under 14 years old.

Once Hernandez was arrested, he was fired from the Sheriff’s Office.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says they are cooperating with ISP’s investigation.
