INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Mexican Consulate of Indianapolis has stepped up to support businesses and welcome fans ahead of the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 25.

Leticia Maki Teramoto, consul general of the Mexican Consulate of Indianapolis, said, “In the case of Indianapolis, the city’s most iconic event is the Indy 500. More and more Mexicans and Hispanics are involved. Not just in the Indy scene, but also because of their interest in racing.”

“The Hispanic and Latino community in this city is growing not just in the involvement of the event itself, but also in the greater impact on the community.”

Pato O’Ward, a Mexican-born IndyCar driver, has sparked significant interest among Mexicans and the entire Hispanic community in Indianapolis.

The Mexican consulate reports it is ready with resources and guidance to make the experience memorable and successful for race fans. The consul general said, “Generally, before a significant event, we disseminate information about what should and shouldn’t be done. We are also very attentive at the Mexican Consulate if anyone has any problems, not just with the law, but simply for having traveled from Mexico and lost their passport.”

The passion for racing ignites a renewed sense of opportunity as some businesses gear up for race day. One standout is a beloved bakery just 15 minutes from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Alfredo Cortes, manager and owner of Artesenal Panderia, said “Yes, we have everything from tres leches cake, thousand layers cakes, which people like, and fruit tarts. That’s what we’re working on now.”

“People prepare, come early, and come for their desserts to enjoy at home at the end of the race.”

The Indianapolis International Airport expects an increase in travelers, from 20% to 50%, during May.
