3 fire territories in southern Madison County to merge

PENDLETON, Ind. (WISH) — Three fire territories in southern Madison County will become one on Jan. 1.

The South Madison Fire Territory in a news release issued Friday afternoon announced a merger with the Lapel-Stony Creek Township Fire Territory based in the town of Lapel, and the Adams-Markleville Fire Territory near the unincorporated community of Emporia.

The release said the merger aims to enhance service capabilities by combining resources, personnel and expertise. The goals include strengthening emergency response, eliminating redundancies, and creating a sustainable model for future growth.

“This partnership is about working smarter together,” said Fire Chief Chris Nodine, emphasizing the benefits of improved response times and expanded coverage for Southern Madison County residents.

The fire territories believe residents will see a seamless transition, as fire stations will remain operational and firefighters from all territories will continue to serve their communities as part of the larger, unified department.

As part of the transition and expansion, the unified fire territory also is hiring new personnel, and interested applicants are encouraged to apply online.

South Madison Fire Territory is based in the town of Pendleton, about an hour’s drive northeast of downtown Indianapolis. The town has grown from 4,739 to 5,758 residents in four years, according to estimates from STATS Indiana
