MONTICELLO, Ind. (WISH) — A 12-year-old child was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital after a boating accident near Indiana Beach caused “significant injury,” state conservation officers said.
Just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, White County dispatchers received a 911 call about a child injured in a boating accident on Lake Shafer in Monticello.
When first responders arrived, they learned that a 12-year-old was tubing behind a boat with family members when “the individual attempted to board the boat while the propeller was engaged,” the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said in a release.
The propeller struck the child in both legs.
The child was taken to shore and then flown by helicopter to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.
Indiana DNR says the child was wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket at the time of the accident.
An investigation is ongoing.
