Whistle Stop Inn ‘significantly damaged’ after late night fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Fire Department says no one was hurt when a fire broke out at a downtown tavern and left the building with “significant damage.”

Firefighters arrived at the Whistle Stop Inn at Illinois and South streets just before 10 p.m., where they saw large amounts of smoke coming from inside.

IFD says there was apparently “heavy electrical arcing presenting from the basement”; crews worked with AES to shut off power to the tavern and “isolate the building from the grid.”

While no one was hurt, IFD noted that construction barricades made it difficult for the AES operator to reach the power lines. AES also had to ask firefighters to move away from the building for their safety.

The fire was marked under control in around 30 minutes. Investigators have not yet said what caused the fire.
